I used to think I had to speak up to belong.

Read MoreMother’s Day can be an emotional rollercoaster for stepmoms. I still remember my very first one—hoping for a simple card, a small acknowledgment that I mattered. Instead, I got nothing. No mention, no nod, no recognition. And what stung the most? Someone else was acknowledged.
I didn’t speak up. I held back my feelings. And by the end of the day, I broke down in tears. My son, only a child, felt my sadness and acted out. Looking back, I realize I had placed expectations on people who barely knew me. I hadn’t yet found my place in the family, let alone earned the space to be celebrated.
Now, years later, I understand that Mother’s Day doesn’t have to fit into one mold. In this blog, I share what I’ve learned about honoring your role, setting boundaries, and creating celebrations that reflect you—not what others expect.
Read MoreLove this Claudette and funny you wrote it – I have been feeling super anxious that I hadn’t finished My Shining Year book (from Leonie Dawson) yet and we’re already into the middle of January. Why was I feeling anxious? Because of exactly what you wrote “there’s a big push and a lot of pressure that if you don’t start on January 1st with setting your goals, publicizing it and asking all your friends to chime in, you’ll fail.” I felt like I was already starting the year off on the “wrong” foot and behind everyone else.
In reality, I’ve had a lot of health stuff going on the last several months and that’s been way more important than sitting down to plan out 2020. Now that I’m feeling better and moving things (health) in the right direction, I am ready to set a few goals.
And I’m giving myself permission to not complete that book if I don’t feel led to sit down and do it. I have a couple biz things I’m excited about that I mapped out, during my VIP day, with Kelly and that’s where my focus is right now. And I feel confident, comfortable and at peace with those few things I’m working on for this year 🙂
YEAH Tish!
I love that you’ve giving yourself permission to talk your time with setting goals. In reality, we can set goals at any point and at any time in our lives. There’s nothing really magical about Jan 01, except pressure IMO.
I’m so happy to hear you’re prioritizing your health too. Without health, we have very little. As Bernard, my husband, celebrates his 65th birthday today, we talk about our health and know that each day, the decisions we make, need to take into account what will keep us health (or make us healthier). That’s why, not doing anything can be the best decision at times.
I look forward in following your journey and encouraging you along the way. 🙂
I feel you Claudette. I feel settled in a good way as we go into 2020. I’m not drawn to setting any big growth goals – I’m focused on letting all that I’ve built work for me.
There’s a new grandbaby coming and I’ve got just the right amount of travel planned for joy and connection.
I might feel entirely different in 2021 – who knows? I’m happy to hustle and grow when the mood strikes 😉
Thanks Kelly. I like the idea of letting what you’ve built in the past work for you. I feel I’m there too.
Congratulations on the new grandbaby. I know I’m thankful that I was able to take the time to be there for the kids in the beginning and later on, to get to know our grandchildren and they, me.
Being flexible in how we live our lives is such a blessing.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts.
This is beautiful, Claudette!
I didn’t make any resolutions this year. There are certain big projects I want to create and bring to life this year. For that reason, I chose the word of the year to be ‘Creation’.
I want to create more content, these big projects, create more art and crafts and continue to create the life I want.
CREATION–Def: the action or process of bringing something into existence.
Wonderful Melissa. I love the word “Creation.” It holds so must power and beauty.
No big projects in view for us – at least not that I know of. This will will be about completing what I started, time to just be in the moment and enjoy connecting and community building.
I like to reevaluate mid year to see how I’m doing and if I want to add/eliminate things from my life.
I’m looking forward in seeing your creations Melissa. Good luck.
