Creating a Self-Care Routine for Stepmoms

Practical Tips for Holiday Stress Relief

In our journey as stepmoms, finding time for self-care can feel like just another chore on a never-ending to-do list. If you’re anything like me, you may have grown up believing that taking a break equates to being lazy or “wasting time.” I used to feel the same way.

I grew up in an environment where busyness was a badge of honor, and as an adult, I carried that belief with me. Even when Bernard entered my life and offered to help lighten my load, I found myself saying “nothing” whenever he asked what he could do for me. Letting someone else help felt unnatural, and resting felt unproductive.

But the truth is, real self-care begins with breaking old habits and giving ourselves permission to pause without guilt. In my own journey, going back to school was a powerful act of self-care. I had always wanted to continue my education, but I held back out of fear and self-doubt.

When I finally made that leap, it filled me with purpose and excitement. It was a “big leap” that nourished me in ways I hadn’t imagined, reminding me that self-care is more than bubble baths or massages—it’s about nurturing your sense of self and making space for your passions and goals. And while not everyone will choose to go back to school, there are many small, meaningful steps that can make self-care part of your daily life.

Creating Your Self-Care Routine

Self-care doesn’t have to be elaborate or time-consuming. In fact, some of the most effective routines are made up of simple, everyday practices that fit into even the busiest schedules. Below are a few ideas for building a self-care routine that can help you recharge, refocus, and reconnect with yourself:

1. Self-Care Menu Ideas Think of these as “mini acts” of self-care that you can mix and match depending on your day:

  • 5-Minute Self-Care Ideas: Deep breathing exercises, a gratitude list, or simply stepping outside for a few moments of fresh air.
  • 10-15 Minutes: A quick walk around the block, a few pages in a favorite book, or a cup of tea enjoyed without any distractions.
  • 30 Minutes or More: Time for a hobby you love, a gentle workout or yoga session, or connecting with a friend who lifts you up.

Choose a few of these options to keep on hand so you can make self-care a part of your day without feeling overwhelmed by time constraints. This flexibility lets you adapt self-care to fit around your commitments while still carving out those precious moments for yourself.

2. Mini Self-Care Sessions Sometimes, all we need are brief “mini-breaks” sprinkled throughout our day. These quick resets can be as simple as taking 5-10 minutes to sit quietly, stretch, or even focus on deep breathing between tasks. For instance, if I feel my energy waning, I’ll step outside and go for a short walk, allowing my mind to clear. Small pauses like these can bring a sense of calm and help you approach the next part of your day with fresh energy.

3. Big Leaps and Little Steps Finally, consider both the “big leaps” and “small steps” that nourish your long-term happiness. For me, going back to school was a big step that reignited my sense of purpose. But not every step needs to be big; sometimes, a short walk or 10 minutes with a good book can bring that same feeling of peace and fulfillment. Reflect on what makes you feel alive and how you might work these activities into your weekly routine, even if just a little bit at a time.

Embracing the Habit of Self-Care

Remember, self-care is a habit—one that can be cultivated over time. It’s about acknowledging that your well-being matters and is worth prioritizing. By creating a flexible routine filled with moments that nourish your spirit, you’re building resilience that will carry you through the season and beyond. Even on the busiest of days, you can find small ways to care for yourself, bit by bit.

Give yourself permission to explore what makes you feel whole and happy. You deserve to feel balanced, energized, and fulfilled, not just during the holidays but all year round.
