Weekends can be challenging for stepmoms. You're trying to juggle work, drive kids to their activities, and catch up on whatever else you need to do at home. Sometimes it feels like you're never going to get a break. Just thinking about this is overwhelming. And you're wondering, "Is it just me? Am I being selfish in wanting time by myself? Spending time with my friends or doing something fun for a change?" And let's face it, sometimes, we may not want to be around our stepkids for whatever reason.
Whether you’re a new stepmom or have been in the role for years, making the most of your weekends is key to a happy and healthy family life. Here are some tips on how to make the most of your weekends as a stepmom:
Pick up a hobby
When I moved to Virginia, I didn't know anyone, so I picked up acrylic painting. I loved it because my brain was focused on things other than problems. Since then, I've picked up watercolor and discovered another aspect of myself. What are some things you've wanted to do or explored but haven't yet? YouTube is a great place to start. You might also try your local library or community center and sign up for an activity just for you.
Journal
If you've been following me, you know how much I believe in the power of journaling. I started journaling as a daily practice, and I've been doing it for years. I credit journaling with saving my sanity (no joke.) I've recently discovered Archer & Olive journals. They are amazing - and I can do my watercolor painting inside as well.
Meet up with a friend
I know many of you feel your friends don't get you and have no idea what you're going through. I have some stepmom friends, but to be honest, when I meet up with them, I want to focus on other things like other areas of my life. Sure, I might talk some about what's bugging me, but most, I want to hang out and enjoy the day.
Action steps

You deserve to take care of yourself. A little pampering will go a long way to help you deal with some of life's pressures.
I’m going to check out those Archer and Olive journals. I’ve been in and out of the journaling habit. I think it’s time to get back into that habit again.
Oh, and coming up next week on Monday, October 24th is National Take Back Your Time Day. So maybe we can all think about and plan out how we’ll take back some of our time for ourselves. Because remember that old oxygen mask directive–you’ve gotta put on the oxygen mask yourself before you can help others.
