Do You Ever Feel Like a Guest in Your Own Home?

If you've ever felt like an outsider in your own home, you're far from the only one. Here's a story about where that feeling comes from—and what actually helps.

There was a time when I'd come home, drop my keys on the counter, and instantly feel out of place.

The kids would be laughing in the next room, Bernard focused on dinner or dishes—and I'd catch myself wondering, Where do I fit in here?

If that sounds familiar, you're not alone. Many stepmoms quietly wrestle with the feeling of being a visitor in their own homes.

This feeling doesn't mean something is wrong with you, and it doesn't mean your family doesn't want you there. It usually means you're standing at the edge of a family system that formed before you arrived—and belonging in that kind of space isn't handed to you. It's built, slowly, often without anyone naming what's happening.

A few things have helped me, and the stepmoms I coach, move through this:

1. Stop waiting for permission to belong. Belonging isn't something someone else grants you when they finally decide you've earned it. It's something you start claiming quietly, for yourself, long before anyone else notices the shift.

2. Find your own version of "home" inside the house. This might be a chair that's yours, a routine only you keep, a corner of the garden, a specific mug. Small, concrete things that are unmistakably yours build a felt sense of belonging faster than any conversation will.

3. Separate the family's history from your place in its future. You weren't there for the years before you arrived, and you don't need to compete with them. Your role isn't to replace what came before—it's to build what comes next, on your own terms.

Have you ever struggled with belonging in your stepfamily? What helped—or what still feels hard?
